Engr. Dr. Samuel Olugbenga Oloruntoba Olusunle
Managing Director/Chief Executive of Engineering Materials Development Institute (EMDI), Akure
Engr. Dr. Samuel Olugbenga Oloruntoba, OLUSUNLE was born in Zaria, Kaduna State; and hails from Isanlu in Kogi State. His educational Career, after primary school continued at Kufena College, Zaria where he obtained combined technical and secondary education. He has further academic qualifications of Bachelors, Masters, and Doctorate degrees in Materials Science and Engineering, coupled with professional qualifications of being a registered Engineer, fellow, and member of several notable professional societies as well as being a professional manager. He also has teaching, research and administrative experience in tertiary institutions of learning (Kwara and Kogi State Polytechnic), where He rose to the rank of Acting Director of the School of Metallurgy and Mineral Resources Engineering of the Kogi State Polytechnic, Lokoja; He also was an adjunct Senior Lecturer with the Federal University, Oye-Ekiti. His area of specialization is Materials Science and Engineering with a special interest in, but not limited, to Structured Materials, and Metallic Alloy Development.
He joined the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) in 2005 as Deputy Director in the Engineering Infrastructure department and also in the Director General’s office (as Special assistant). He has worked for NASENI for about sixteen years and has been part of the paradigm shift of the system in recent years which has brought NASENI to the limelight. His experience in teaching and research has enhanced his ability for publication as he has authored and co-authored over fifty articles in scholarly journals both within and outside Nigeria. Most of his journal publications revolve around Ceramics, Corrosion and Foundry Science and Engineering.
He, as Special Assistant to Late Prof. Adewoye O.O. (DG/CE NASENI, 2003-2010) coordinated the following activities and projects for the Agency:
i. Training Workshop on “Mechatronics and its Applications to Enhance Industrial Productivity” [held at the NASENI headquarters, Idu Industrial Area Abuja from 18th to 22nd June 2007]
ii. Training on COMSOL Multiphysics (AC/DC, Acoustics, Chemical Engineering, Earth Science, Heat Transfer, MEMS, RF, and Structural Mechanics Modules) held at the NASENI headquarters, Idu Industrial Area Abuja from 28th to 30th May 2008
iii. Training on Computer-Aided Manufacturing using Pro/Engineer held at NASENI, Idu Industrial Area Abuja from 22nd to 26th July 2008
iv. Training Workshop on “Factory Automation” with Emphasis on Pneumatics and Electromechanical Automation held at the Prototype Engineering Development Institute Ilesa Osun State from 25th May to 5th June 2009]
v. Establishment of Power Equipment and Electrical Machinery Development Institute (PEEMADI), Okene.
vi. Establishment of Prototype Engineering Development Institute (PEDI), Ilesa
vii. Establishment of Advanced Manufacturing Technology Centre (AMT-C), Jalingo
He was appointed the Acting Director of Engineering Materials Development Institute, EMDI, Akure on April 1st, 2012. The Institute made significant progress in its research areas such as in Nanotechnology, Organic Electronics, Light Emitting Devices, Solar Cell, Austempered Ductile Iron, Materials characterization, Advanced Foundry Technology and Laboratory development. There has been effective and prudent management of the institute’s scarce resources culminating in the acquisition of facilities/equipment that are not easy to find across the length and breadth of Nigeria such as the Gear Hobber and the Wear Resistance Measuring Machines. Notable among the products of the Institute under his watch are: 500kg recuperative rotary furnace, 1&2 KW propeller
hydro-turbines, food processing machines, development and production of smart controls for rotary furnace and vertical machining center (VMC), production of salt-bath and muffle furnaces, etc. The Institute was able to produce a high-pressure pump for the National Water Resources Institute Kaduna; Production of Impeller for Ekiti State Water Corporation; Development of 5 units of Twin-Mould Interlocking Brick Making Machine for the Nigerian Building Research Institute (NBRRI) just to mention a few. Engr. Dr. Olusunle was also the Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee of a Capacity Building Course: “Training on Diffusion of Turbine Technology for SHP Development in West Africa” from 26 – 30 November 2012 at EMDI Akure. He had earlier facilitated a similar workshop by the National Board for Technology Incubation which also took place and was hosted by EMDI. This is in addition to the ingenuity employed to save the institute huge overhead that is expended on alternative power supply by connecting the institute to the 33KVA power line thereby resulting in more productivity with the improved stability in power supply. There has equally been the strengthening of collaboration with more Institutions of higher learning and other stakeholders, notable among them are the Federal University of Technology, Akure; the Federal University, Oye Ekiti, the Nigeria Air Force and Centre for Satellite Technology Development. There was also significant success in the area of Reverse Engineering and Equipment Development.
He was a member of the team put together by the EVC/CEO NASENI, Prof. M.M.S. Haruna, that successfully designed, developed, produced and installed Disinfecting Chambers at the early stage of the COVID-19 pandemic.
He is running his second tenure as the Managing Director/Chief Executive of the Engineering Materials Development Institute (EMDI), Akure, Ondo State.
Engr. Dr. S.O.O. Olusunle is happily married and blessed with children.
