ENGINEERING MATERIALS DEVELOPMENT INSTITUTE,
(EMDI), AKURE

The Engineering Materials Development Institute (EMDI), Akure undertakes Research and Development (R&D) work in the area of engineering materials and engineering materials' infrastructure for the production of various types, sections and sizes for application to machinery and equipment production. The technology produced is thereafter transferred to private sector organization, industries and relevant government agencies. EMDI also offers consultancy, technical and training services to organizations.

The vision of EMDI is to be a Research and Development Institute of repute and to be a rallying point for engineering materials development in Nigeria and Africa as a whole.

The facilities available at EMDI include a Materials Science Laboratory, Foundry Technology and Training Centre, Mechanical and Fabrication Workshop, Library and Conference Centre. These facilities have enabled EMDI to develop and transfer a number of technologies to SMEs in the country. The technologies and facilities developed at EMDI include:

(i) Development of Foundry Technology Capabilities and Rotary Furnace for the production of Spare Parts

  • Development of Ausptempered Ductile Iron (ADI)
  • Development of a precision temperature measurement device for a furnace using Radio Telemetry
