It is generally agreed that the scientific development of any nation is enhanced by the quality of science education in its schools. The foundation of formal education is in the primary level where basic knowledge is imparted. This is later built upon at the secondary and tertiary levels. There is hardly any economic activity which is not fueled and propelled by Science and Technology. Yet education at all levels in Nigeria is in a deplorable state. Most of the times Nigeria produces gradautes who have memorized concepts but are not able to apply the knowledge received in solving everyday problems. The problem starts from the primary level and is eventually compounded at the secondary and tertiary level. This state of affair calls for an emergency in the reinvigoration of the educational system in Nigeria.

Technological take-off in any country depends critically on a number of factors, one of which is the skill and training acquired in tertiary institutions.

There is no short circuit here. As a matter of fact, the success of the growth of technologies in the advanced countries of the West and those of the emerging countries of the South East Asia has been attributed to the quality of instruction and skills obtained in their tertiary educational institutions. A strong correlation has been observed worldwide between the GDP of a nation and the quality of personnel who have acquired skills in tertiary education. The Science and Engineering personnel are critical to national development.

The teaching of Science and Engineering subjects must be practically oriented. It is common knowledge that Science and Engineering students in our tertiary institutions are not having enough practical exposure and perhaps none at all in recent years. This has resulted to the production of Science and Engineering graduates who are very deficient in practical skills and this leads to a dearth of qualified manpower in Science and Technology which directly affects the level and rate of technological growth of the nation. NASENI with the mandate to make available in the Nigerian market, the primary and intermediate capital products required for machine and equipment design, fabrication and mass production, in order to provide the enabling environment for a sustainable industrialization of the country is poised to addressing the gap in our educational system. This has led the Agency to developing Science and Engineering Infrastructure and provision of facilities that can be used as aids in the teaching of Science and Engineering in our institutions and for research and development purposes.

Every nation needs to harness her human and material resources for the development / growth of her citizens and her environment. Value-addition to the natural resources is possible by development technology.
